Intuitively, one cannot deny the natural bond that usually exists between parent and child. The effects of parent involvement in their children’s education through this bond have been well documented in various studies. To mention a few, Coleman Hoffer (1987) conducted a comparative study on the reading and mathematics proficiencies between two groups in the New York education system and found that the superior performance of one group over the other can be attributed to greater concern coming from the parents or guardians of students in that superior group regarding their home works, projects, and examination results.Collins et al. (1982) in a previous study also proved that parent involvement programs integrated into the public school system could actually improve student achievement, reduce absenteeism, and improve student behavior inside the classroom. A ll of this points to the immutable role of the parent in the studies of their children. Positive parental attitude towards their child’s education has been proven to motivate the child to learn.This underscores the responsibility of the institution and subsequently of classroom teachers themselves to provide avenues for parental involvement in student learning. In my opinion, the primary measure that should be taken toward this goal is an improvement on teacher-to-parent transparency. Teachers should provide ways for parents to know how their children are progressing in each subject matter.Previous means that were put forward for this purpose required students to have their parents sign previously assessed and returned home works or examinations. However, this method is tokenistic at best. It and others similar to it are easily bypassed and are insensitive to today’s advanced times. Teachers should find better ways to reach parents and this can be done through modern m eans such as the internet. By collecting parents’ email information, a teacher can simply send assessment results on a regular basis online through one of the most widely used communications media available. Coupled with an extensive information drive about such a new innovation, parents would be made aware of their children’s learning progress which in turn would give them the necessary foresight to influence their children whenever necessary.
